I just obtained Toy Story 3, the file type reads X264-ETHOS-file, it opens and plays fine in MPC but I cannot get xbmc to see or play it.

thnx for sharing but if you like things to change for the better you need to supply a Debug Log and info related to the file.

By the sounds of it it's because you've got a funky file extension that xbmc doesnt recognise as a media file.
Try changing the file extension to .mkv and see what happens then
You may need to alter Window's folder settings to allow you to change the file extension, but that seems the most likely reason for your issue.
MPC will load the file once you've selected it, and it's probably set to show all file types in the open menu, whereas XBMC filters for media type files
