MythTV <-> XBMC roadmap?

Question
Hi All,

Perhaps I'm the only one who is a little unclear as to the plan for future mythtv integration into XBMC.

The beauty of XBMC is the simply navigated menus, enabling anyone (people who dont know xbmc) to get to the content, without too much trouble.

The myth:// protocol integrates the content into the existing "video" sections seamlessly, but doesnt provide EPG, liveTV etc... uPnP is operational, but lighter on features... mythbox is now (or soon will be) an addon and appears to be feature rich, but I cant figure out how it relates to the mythtv PVR addon work?

There appears to be a few different active streams of development in this area including
1) Mythbox
http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=43115

2) Myth pvr addon
http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid...ght=mythtv

3) myth:// protocol. Works well for me. Doesnt have all the bells-n-whistles, but is functional.

4) uPnP protocol. Woks ok, but doesnt appear to auto-skip adverts.

5) PVR. Possibly unrelated, but i'd like to know how this fits with existing XBMC and Mythtv. I guess it's a replacement for mythbackend?

Any clues/advice/comment would be greatly appreciated.

On another note, at the risk of hijacking my own thread, under dharma the new themes menu items like "TV shows" dont list content added under the myth:// protocol. I have to navigate down to "Files" to see the content. Is there a best practice for modern themes, even if only to set the default view in "TV shows" to "Files"?

Cheers,

Nathan

There is some work being done at present to integrate recorded TV into the XBMC TV Shows library. For the moment this is being done with the myth:// source, but will hopefully eventually also work with PVR Addons. http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/10347

There is also some work being done on the MythTV PVR Addon to allow the EPG to be shown in XBMC and allow scheduling of TV Shows and Live TV. This has just started so is also some ways off. http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=82015

Once all the PVR Addon integration is finished with MythTV and the PVR Addon has been migrated to trunk, the existing myth:// protocol will be redundant and likely removed in the far off distant future.

For the moment, you also have the option of using the Python Addon MythBox.

More details about current support for MythTV on the wiki. I will try to update that with more information about the future changes once the PVR Addon is further along. http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=MythTV
Use MythTV for recording TV? Try the integrated MythTV support in XBMC Media Center. Now with commercial skip support built-in and integration with the Movie database!

Thanks very much for the information, i appreciate the time taken to reply.
Sounds like the existing myth:// protocol should already be capable of listing movies held in mythtv, and setting the content type... with TV shows not far round the corner.

Until the dust settles on the xbmc pvr stuff, im more than happy to use mythtv as the backend, i'd just like my mythtv content to display nicely in xbmc. Further digging required.

Thanks again.

You'll still need to be using MythTV as the backend once the PVR integration is done in XBMC. XBMC Media Center will just be a frontend to show the information recorded by a PVR backend like MythTV or MediaPortal.

It seems like TVHeadend, and to a lessor extent VDR, are the most developed PVR branch backends and will be for a while.

I though development was pushing towards TVHeadend or VDR as well? No matter which way it goes I will likely use it instead of Media Center for my TV needs.

I've been with myth for ages, and i think its great as a backend solution. I'm willing to try TVHeadend, but cant find any current commercial skip functions that are equivalent to what comes with mythtv. Does anyone have any expereince with this?
