folder structure and file compatibility

Can you guys advise what is the best (if any) file structure for xbmc? And what formats are supported?

I've searched the forum and read the install guide by cannot get xbmc to index all of my movies.

I currently have a TViX and all movies are .mkv and .iso image files stored on a QNAP NAS, approx 1000 movies. I've set up the source to my movies folder. The movies folder then has a genre folder with the movies in.

Once the scan is complete it has only indexed 194 movies. All of the .mkv's and a few .iso's. It just doesn't seem to recognise the majority of .iso's.

Should I set up a source for each genre as opposed to the top level movies folder. Will this work?

Thanks for your help,
M

xbmc will work with almost all extensions and file structures. the generally accepted "standard" is "\\server\movies\movie title (year)\movie.ext" or "\\server\tv shows\show name\season x\show - sxxexx - episode.ext" though it doesn't need to be in this format.

read the wiki on the video library and if your files are in genre subfolders ensure recursive scanning is available.

Setting the source on the top movies level is fine, just make sure you have recursive scanning options set too.

Are your movies in their own sub folder too, or are the files just placed in the genre folder?

A debug log of you doing a scan will show why things aren't being picked up.

Do a debug log and post it to pastebin.com

My folder structure is: "\\server\movies\Genre\movie title (year)\movie.ext

The source I addes is "\\server\movies

Scan recursively is ticked.

I'm at a loss on what to do next.

Make sure you also have use folder names for lookups enabled.

If that doesn't work,

1. Make sure you are using the default skin, confluence.
2. ENable debug logging
3. Restart xbmc
4. Do a scan.
5. Exit XBMC
6. Upload your xbmc.log to pastebin.com and provide the link here.

Thanks Prae5. I'll enable debug logging tonight and we re-scan.

A really novice question: where will I find the debug log and how will I upload it?

Thanks

Thanks Prae5. I'll enable debug logging tonight and will re-scan.

The movies are in their own folder: "\\server\multimedia\movies\Genre\movie title\movie.ext

A really novice question: where will I find the debug log and how will I upload it?

First up, upgrade to a newer build the one you are on is *really* old and you will have some issues depending on what scraper you are trying to use.

Grab the latest dharma beta from http://mirrors.xbmc.org/releases/osx/

Also is there anything else in these folders nfo or xml files?

I'll download the latest build now. And yes, I currently use TViX and the folders contain 5 other files, 1 is a.xml, 2 are .jpg and 2 are proprietry files .guikuo.
