One database, many users...?

Hey guys,

Starting to plan my next setup. Will only happen in a year or so, but I'll be fairly busy on course during that time.

Basically, I'd like to run a file server that will also serve as a MKV-making machine, on which I'd have XBMC (I'm hoping that by that time, the PVR client will also be ready) and all of its database. This computer would be in my office/studio.

Then, I'd have a full HTPC/gaming rig in the theater room, and either media players or mini-ITX PCs (probably running Linux) in the living room and the bedroom, all three streaming media from the file server.

My question is : Is it possible to have the streaming machines use the database on the file server?

Thanks!

Use a mysql database.

Beautiful!! This is EXACTLY what I was hoping to do.

Now - I was planning on running the HTPC/Gaming rig on Windows 7, the smaller PCs on Linux (if I don't opt for media players - but if I do, this whole thread becomes moot) and the server Windows Home Server.

Does MySQL allow cross-pollination of platforms like that? My understanding based on my limited readings is that yes, just looking to confirm.

Also, is the fanart and thumbnails stored locally or over the network? Lifehacker's article mentions that they are stored locally, although the ability to do that over a network is forthcoming (the article also seems fairly recent, Sept 2010, as I recall...?).

Thanks!!!

You need to move the thumbnail cache to the server and symlink it across pcs. Read the how to thread for info on how to do that. Yes, MySQL is OS agnostic.

Thank you very much - but, a quick search yielded nothing on said how-to thread. Could I kindly ask for a link?

Cheers!
