After years of 2.1 shackles, I've finally got a nice Sony 5.1 system on the way...

I have this motherboard:

It says that it has "2/4/5.1/7.1-channel (Note)
Note: To configure 7.1-channel audio, you need connect with the port of HD Audio standard via front panel and enable the multi-channel audio feature through the audio driver"

Does this mean I connect the HDAudio on the MB to the front panel input of the case, and plug a s/pdif cable between there and an input of the sony receiver? Will this work in Ubuntu?

I bought one this month from that exact vendor (for a gigabyte mobo) so I can recommend directly. You plug that into the mobo, and then it has a SPDIF on it.

Haha, that's exactly what I need! I just realized my case doesn't have a RCA-sized plug or anything, and was thinking I needed some kind of "PCI slot s/pdif hole" :p Then I saw your post...

Only thing, it says input... but I'm sure it will work for output too. Is there any US dealers?

Good find. With that one you will have to adjust the pinout, but that is not very hard to do.
