Conflict between XBMC SMB shares and Windows Live ID Sign-In Assistant
#1
Hello,

I have been successfully using XBMC on my modded XBOX since 2004. I have continually updated the version until they stopped being produced. I have Win7 64-bit on my main machine in the basement connected via 100 Mb Ethernet. It worked like a charm until Nov 15th.

On that day, Games for Windows Live rolled out a major update. Here is the announcement :

http://forums.gamesforwindows.com/t/1552...ageIndex=1

The critical phrase is this one : "The Windows LIVE ID Sign-in Assistant is now required and is installed as part of the update". Unfortunately, having that installed does not allow me to connect to any SMB shares from my XMBC on my XBOX any longer. It comes up with the Lock Preferences box, and asks me to log in. No amount of logging in will help.

I have discovered that if I uninstall "Windows LIVE ID Sign-In Assistant" then XBMC SMB shares work once again. The problem is that when I play a Games for Windows Live game (which I do fairly regularly), it reinstalls that program and once again SMB shares stop working. What is interesting is that other Windows machines can connect to my SMB shares, it is only the XBOX which cannot.

Does anyone know how I can fix this problem? It looks like Windows Games (such as Batman Arkham Asylum) will continuously try to force me to install that Assistant, so I would rather have it installed and figure out how to make XBMC SMB sharing work, if possible.

Thanks,
DD.

Same problem here, just ran into this last night. Would love to know a way to access shares and run this damn Windows Live Sign in Assistant at the same time.

Support for xbox was dropped some time ago and is no longer supported here. There is however still an active community at http://xbmc4xbox.org

I'm in your exact shoes: avid XBMC user since 2003, and avid PC gamer, including many Games for Windows Live games (currently Red Faction: Guerrilla). Since the Games For Windows Live 3.4 update rolled out on November 15, my samba shares to my Xbox no longer work. Like you, I uninstalled Games For Windows Live, and the samba shares worked once more. But I really would like to find a work-around, since I'm unwilling either to give up PC gaming or streaming media to my TV. If there's no workaround, this may be the final death blow to my 7 year love affair with XBMC on XBOX :-(

This issue is not restricted to XBMC on the Xbox.

I've got a live installation at home, and it is unable to connect to my Windows 7 box whenever I have the "Live Sign-in Assistant" installed, which is required to play Batman: Arkham Asylum, amongst other "Games for Windows Live" games apparently.

The test system I'm using here is is running the latest beta, and connecting to a Windows 7 system with "Windows Live Essentials 2011", which is causing exactly the same issues.

This bug needs to be resolved ASAP as the program that is conflicting with on Windows 7 is now a *REQUIRED* update.

The chances of getting MS to "fix" their software is zero. Hopefully the odds are higher on this side of the fence.

FYI: This issue has apparently been fixed in Samba for a while.

bumping this thread because the moderator's reply is embarrassing, like a robot reply script where you get an automated reply that has nothing to do with your problem... and because i've found two other threads started in november, including one that i started, that complain about this issue and have not received any response.

Also interested in a fix for this, it seems like MS are putting abit of effort into their games for windows setup, along with this Live ID being introduced into alot of their other stuff now too, so its going to be either a case of not updating/being able to use alot of programs or not having smb shares working Sad (im on a Live setup, but it seems to be universal across all builds)

This problem is not xbmc related. It's a bug in Samba.

It has been reported here:

https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7577

Will probably be adressed in next release.

Read your own link. They've already patched it in Samba and has been as of July 27th. XBMC bundles its own samba client, meaning that the XBMC team has to fix it. Not only that, but the fact that it's been fixed in Samba has already been pointed out in this thread.

If you look closer you'll see that the bug has been fixed in Samba. So yes, it is an XBMC problem, as they need to get the fixed code into XBMC.

Ah wasn't aware xbmc had is own smb client code. Thought it was using host libsmbclient.

I searched in xbmc where libsmb is handled, but i don't find it.
Any hint ?

Neither was I, to be honest, until I went to ask the AppleTV jailbreaking folks about how to update libsmb once I found out that the bug was fixed and they told me no could do because XBMC rolls its own samba support. Laugh

we don't roll our own. we use system supplied one.
Always read the XBMC online-manual, FAQ and search the forum before posting.
Do not e-mail XBMC-Team members directly asking for support. Read/follow the forum rules.
For troubleshooting and bug reporting please make sure you read this first.

The Apple TV jailbreak guys seem to disagree:
