i added the sources from the dharma ppa. and then i did sudo apt-get xbmc
but when i opened xbmc it only showed the splash screen and it got back to the desktop
any ideas??

If you want real help, post as much details as possible, this is me writing and everyone thinking it as they read.
apt-get xbmc does nothing... no idea what flavor ubuntu you referr to. (theres more then one e.g. Karmic, Lucid, maverick minimal or desktop of those as well) no xbmc logs and no machine details.
best you grab xbmclive iso and install. or read the wiki, which gives you plenty of relevant info. Also search forums its been done to death what you looking for.
