XBMC constantly locking up.

is there any tests I can do on the drive to check its ok?

Some of use had the same issues/freezes. We had to upgrade our Ubuntu to 12.04. So, if you are using ubuntu+xbmc just do a release-upgrade. But if you are using XBMCbuntu then there will probably problems upgrading as i've heard.
