XBMC Remote Confusion
#1
Hi All,

I'm currently running an older version of XBMC/Ubuntu on an old shuttle machine I had lying around.

I've now decided im going to invest in a Revo 3700 (windows 7) as well as a new remote to control everything with the latest version of XBMC

There seems to be a lot of outdated information on the boards regarding remotes which has left me scratching my head to be honest.

I need to be able to control the Revo 3700 (win 7), Logitech Z5000 speakers and a Panasonic Viera plasma TV.

I'm currently looking at the logitech harmony remotes, but im worried about compatability with XBMC.

I was wondering if anyone could clarify compatability and make any suggestions.

Thanks for your time

See http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Usi..._with_XBMC for general notes on using remote controls. If you plan to use a Harmony I would buy a Microsoft receiver *not* some cheap clone, because you can configure the Harmony to emulate the Microsoft handset. See http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Usi...in_Windows for general notes on Microsoft remotes.

Hi,

By the microsoft reciever do you mean the one like in this picture http://www.baselinetech.ca/images/partskeymice04.jpg ? if so I've got one Smile

Neither of those links other any specific information for the harmony line of remotes though.

Just out of interest, what remote do you use/recommend?

Not sure if that works. The HP Receiver will read any standard remote I have in my house.

I have my Yamaha Stereo and Samsung TV remotes mapped in LIRC.

I think you will be fine with a harmony; for the potential issue with other remotes I'd suggest to just test it beforehand, although I honestly cannot imagine it'll really pick up any existing remotes signals, I have plenty of remotes to test here, including Samsung, Sharp and LG TVs, Yamaha and Pioneer Receivers, Samsung Cable Boxes, Sony DVD-Recorders even Technics CD Player :-), ... and nothing causes any issues with the RC6 receiver on the mediacenter.

Harmony compatibility with xbmc is not an issue, also, you may check out my thread at: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=77519

Excellent, you should have no problems getting the Harmony to work.

The Harmony can emulate a Microsoft handset, so as far as the PC is concerned it's just using a Microsoft handset and receiver. I don't own a Harmony so I don't know how you configure the emulation, but I think you run some software on your PC.

See the second link I mentioned for configuring a (emulated) Microsoft remote.
