hmmm the atheros AR9285 does not seem to be supported by the live CD

try to install linux-backports-modules-wireless-lucid-generic and see if the wlan card gets recognized

for setting up wlan, you can try WICD afterwards http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=81858
OpenElec Standalone --> Asus Chromebox 'Panther' --> Onkyo TX-NR709 --> Sony 55" X85C Android TV (also with Kodi!)
Asus Chromebox EZ Script
Kodi on Sony Bravia Android TVs

Do you have a CD player? If so a quick check is to boot a ubuntu desktop Live CD and see if the wireless is working.

If it is working wicd-curses is very easy to use from terminal

Same problem here with the Asrock ION 3D 152B the black.

I have exactly the same output and I've also tried with wicd and it can't find any wireless nwtwork.

Do you get any progress?

Hi,

You might wanna look over here, I found this thread on the ubuntuforums. Same wi-fi card (Atheros AR9285) and using latest Ubuntu 10.10 version.

Hope this helps

Thumbs Up
Hi,

I had the same problem and spent many hours finding the answer.

The Atheros 9k is irrelevant.

The hardware is RTL8192S via USB.

lspci doesn't show the WLAN, but lsusb does.

However, maverick is missing the right firmware in the right directory.

This link has the correct answer (the one that work for me, anyway):
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sourc...omments/35

My steps:
Code:
wget http://launchpadlibrarian.net/37387612/rtl8192sfw.bin.gz
gunzip rtl8192sfw.bin.gz
sudo mkdir /lib/firmware/RTL8192SU
sudo mv rtl8192sfw.bin /lib/firmware/RTL8192SU/

Then reboot, or:
Code:
sudo rmmod r8192s_usb
sudo modprobe r8192s_usb

HTH.

regards,
RR

Hi guys,

I got the same problem. Wicd is able to list networks. However, connecting always ends with "Bad password". And, yes, I inserted the correct password. The network is encrypted with WPA TKIP, if that matters...

Anyone any progress? I tried to steps russelr provided. Result as above

I have a similar problem with my ION 152D... I have installed XBMC Live from the CD (which is based on 10.04)

Connection to a/b/g works fine, but I'm having problems with connecting to an N-only access point.

I have installed the drivers as above, and I can use wicd-curses to see/configure/connect to my access points. My other access point that is non-N works perfectly as does wired.

In searching the ubuntuforums it seems that many people had issues with N connectivity after their ubuntu install was upgraded to 10.04.

Basically I can see the access point, and I can connect to it if there is no encryption, but the transfer speeds are between 500kp/s and 2MB/s Sad

Can't seem to find a solution to this, has anyone had any luck?

Here's a dmesg dump grepping for 8192. This is the end of what appears after I try and connect to my N-access point. There are hundreds of similar lines appearing above this...

EDIT: I've just installed one of the latest XBMCFreak Live CDs (10.0 Nuvoton v2). I haven't played with the wifi on it yet, but I imagine it will be much the same, I'll post back with any findings.

It must be a driver issue. n works fine with wicd-curses and wpa2 on 10.04.

Sad

vikjon0, do you have the ION 152 working fine? Did you follow the same steps above?

I have found that every now and then it will connect, but ultimately it's unlreliable and fails. Regardless of whether encryption is turned off or on, I get very poor transfer speeds.

I've been testing it on my mixed mode AP (same AP as other devices in the house) and that is unreliable as well.

I have uninstalled network-manager... and I'm running off the XBMCFreak nuvoton 10.0 v2 image... not sure what else I can try!

No, I was just confirming that it is not a general problem in 10.04/wicd-curses
I have ion330HT, no extra driver neede¨.

If you havent yet you could boot a ubuntu 10.04 desktop live CD or try 10.10 dito just to see if they have it working in standard ubuntu.

EDIT: my wifi now seems to be working

Steps I followed:
(This obviously helps if you have a wired connection to perform setup)

As a pre-requisite you may want to 'rmmod' any conflicting kernel modules and read about ndiswrapper & how it works Wink
Checked that my device was actually a USB device and is connected properly
Code:
lsusb
...
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0bda:8172 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
...

1) Install ndiswrapper
Code:
sudo apt-get install ndisgtk
Ubuntu ndiswrapper help here.

2) Head over to the Realtek site, go to downloads. Search for "RTL8192SU" (U = usb)
Download the XP driver "RTL8192SU (Software)" -> "Utility and Driver Auto Installation Program (Support Win2K/XP/Vista/Win7)(Install Shield v1.00.0175)" (roughly 27.8mb)

3) Unzip the files locally. Choose a driver to install, I chose the XP driver (....\88_91_92_SU_Driver\WinXP\net8192su.inf)
Copy the inf file over to the XBMC box using WinSCP/FileZilla etc
Install the inf file:
Code:
sudo ndiswrapper -i ~/winxp_8192su/net8192su.inf

4) If you haven't already - download wcid so you can use wcid-curses to setup your wifi connection
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install wicd-curses

5) Start wicd and configure your connection:
Code:
wicd start
wicd-curses
(an interface will load and the rest is pretty straight forward)

this is working for me... but after starting wicd-curses and push ENTER on a WLAN network, it hangs on obtaining ip address.

Anyone having this same problem??

I will setup a new ASRock to my father. I only found the new 3D version... Mine I use wired network, but I will need to run WiFi in this new unit.

So, let me ask: anybody is using the linux driver?
Searching Realtek's site, I've found this file: rtl8712_8188_8191_8192SU_usb_linux_v2.6.6.0.20101111.zip

http://www.realtek.com/downloads/downloa...#RTL8192SU

Suppose to works with the card 8192SU, using wpa_supplicant (my father's wifi is WPA2+AES).

What's the better (simpler and stable) way: ndiswrapper or Linux driver? I did a try with ndiswrapper a few years ago and, let's say, I'm a little traumatized. Obvious, it should be much more developed now....

Cheers and thanks in advance for any advice!!
