There is an interesting thread on the unRAID forum where one of the users has compiled a list of several builds based on the maximum capacity they can hold and include links to components and prices. You may use that as a starting point since that hardware can be used regardless of the NAS software you may choose to run.

SwissElite Wrote:so im more asking about the rest... cpu, mainboard and stuff For a NAS? I would start with this combo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealD...mbo.581112 Add whatever RAM, I like Kingston for value: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...-_-Product Add this case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...-_-Product And this PSU: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.asp...-_-Product And you have a six bay NAS ready to go cheaper by far than any 4 bay NAs on the market. Add another $60 in hardware: Two these: http://www.mwave.com/mwave/SKUSearch_v3....ia=AA74422 and one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6817993002 And you are at 10 bays at around $300. Only thing I don't like about the list is they all have weaker CPUs, which is ok for JUST Unraid but if you want sick/sab/torrents on your server its nice to have a little extra CPU. in the list here:
http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=7998.0 they add "hot swappable" bays.... its it an advantage to have that? (worth the bucks?) - i mean... i can simply shut it down, exchange the drives and boot it again? happens once in a lifetime (hopefully)... |

You are right, I personally don't like them either because they are too expensive. I thing they list them because of the higher hdd density / number of 5" slots, so you can squeeze more drives into the case. I would personally buy more drives for the money and use the screwdriver to secure them. |
