then, im screwed if i want to use RAID5??

thx

No your not, as people have been saying, you don't want to use the hardware RAID.

You want to set the drives up as JBOD and then let your OS/Raid software control the drives and set them up in whatever raid type you want.

But that motherboard only has one pci-e x1 slot which will limit your future expansion (4 from the motherboard + 2-4 from one pci-e sata card).

For securing 4 drives into 3 x 5.25" slots, I would recommend the coolermaster cage which also provides very silent and adequate cooling.

Edit: Just noticed Poofy already listed this on his list.

I can only speak for unRAID but I would expect other NAS software to be similar. In general term, pretty much any main board with SATA ports can be used for such a project. But since there can be exceptions to the rules, I would play safe a choose something for the extensive list of components that have already been tested and known to work.

Its just easier to take out the drives. Not worth it to me so far.

do i understand correctly but there is no other way than a hardware RAID if i want to use Windows 7 on the same computer (at the same time, accessing the raided storage?), as a software RAID need a seperately running OS (such as FreeNAS) - thus, WIN7 cannot run at the same time, making 2 separate computers necessary?

Windows 7 can build software raid (as can most linux distros and mac os)

FreeNas/Unraid (et al) is just a specialised OSes for dedicated NAS/File servers, but by no means the only solution.
