#61
i was hoping for a poofy agree Smile

here's my 6TB NAS build (expandable up to 10 Hard Disk Drives):
................................................................................

[CPU] AMD Sempron 2.7GHz AM3 45W Single-Core ($37 + $0)
[RAM] Kingston 1GB 240-Pin DDR3 1066Mhz ($13 + $10)
[MOBO] Foxconn M61PMP-K AM3 MicroATX ($47 + $0)
[PSU] CORSAIR CX430 430W ATX12V ($45 + $4 - $20 MIR)
[CASE] Antec VSK-2000 ($44 + $0)
[HDD] 3 x Seagate 2TB 5900 rpm SATAII 32MB ($240 + $0)
[TOTAL] $442 CAD (o.O) !!

hard to beat huh!
remove those 2TB hard drives from there = a $200 NAS kit!!!

eskro Wrote:i could convert my PSU's 4 SATA plugs to --> 16 SATA plugs? (if i want)

Not the PSU's SATA power connectors but the Molex type ones (the other ones Smile) which your PSU should have plenty.

Good call on the Antec case. I can now 100% sign off on the build with that change. This thread delivered.

Be sure to check which firmware those drives have and update if they aren't newest ones for maximum performance. Pretty fun to do actually.

I do it all the time, especially for SSDs (you really want the newest firmware there). The label should say what firmware revision it is, if its older than CC35 than update.

Here is how:

ok thanks, will read on this!

So RAID5 is good for media storage right?

cuz thats what i plan to use....

I had a RAID 5 server for a year prior to my Unraid switch and it worked great for media. Be sure to use Linux software raid though, and not mobo semi-hardware RAID:

That way you can grow the array when you add more disks.

I will say though, with just three disks you could use the Free version of Unraid. You know that is my favorite mediaserver OS.

well im planning to use FreeNAS as my RAID software...

and i was listening to this guy's video about RAID5 --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuwjadbtUCY

he says to boost write speed on a RAID5, i should get a dedicated RAID Card,,,

i dont know,,, what do you think?

thx

Yeah, same basic thing as in Linux. In fact, FreeNAS lets you into ZFS which can be configured to be a more advanced RAID 5.

NOOOOOO

That is the exact thing to avoid. Hardware RAID is faster, but it is less reliable. The speed difference between the two never matters with media, but the extra costs and hassles do matter.

roger that! no hardware raid card,,, Tongue

i'll look into ZFS... dont know what it is yet...

i thing tho, i didnt know that i would loose 2TB of disk space using RAID5..

since im going with 3x2TB HDD, using RAID5, i get 4TB of disk space only..
third disk is used for parity check....

so i can store 4TB of data on a 6TB raid5 setup..

didnt know that,,,

Only real downside of RAIDZ compared to RAID 5 is that its easier to add disks to RAID 5. Either way is good.

Yeah that is parity. That way if either data disk dies, the information is saved.

wait up!

ZFS/RAIDZ does double parity check!!!

so i loose Half the drives!!!

buy 4. but store data on 2...

Not used ZFS but this is where unRAID shines. You only have 1 parity drive regardless of how many drives the array has. 1 Parity + 12 data drives or 1 Parity + 2 data drives.

Tradeoff with unRAID is slower write performance but can be addressed with a cache drive.

You can chose to just use one parity drive with RAIDZ.
