I ran into this problem today, and I think I narrowed down the reason of the crash to this in /var/log/syslog:
While SSHed into the Apple TV, I could still ping mesu.apple.com. I removed the extra blank line from the end of /etc/hosts and now all is well. If anyone would like to use my exact hosts file, I've put it up for download here.
