Problems starting xbmc on Windows Server 2008 R2
#1
Hi all,

I read in another thread that it is possible running xbmc on a Server 2008 R2 system. I have this from my MSDNAA and I use it for my mails, network shares, ...

I installed the desktop experience feature.

Starting xbmc is ending up in an error.

This is the content of the xbmc.log-file:

I think you need to have a directx enabled videocard....
might be your driver from the videocard or the microsoft directx drivers...

try to download a new driver and download the directx redistributable package (google it) and see if it works again...

XBMC may or may not work in an RDP session. Officially it isn't supported, but some people have got it to work. You'll need to use 32 bit colour, and in System settings, System, Video output, you'll probably need to enable "Use a full screen window instead of true fullscreen".

Thanks a lot.
Yes it is because of RDP. I read about the setting for windowed fullscreen instead of fullscreen.

Does this have impact on the picture quality or on hardware acceleration or something else?

both
you don't want to use RDP for using XBMC or watching media....
that's not what it was intended for...
it's a remote desktop, not remote applications....

all that RDP does is send you the image that is on the screen of the host to the client.... that's supposed to be a desktop...
not a fullhd image that changes 30 times a second with 8 discrete channels of high definition audio....

Hi,

no, I meant this option in xbmc-settings "windowed fullscreen instead of fullscreen".

What impacts does this option have?

Thanks & regards

True fullscreen is faster at rendering video than using a fullscreen window. Whether this matters depends on your hardware. Try it and see.

Thank you. So this setting will remain at true fullscreen :-)

Hi everyone,

I've the same problem on Win 2008 R2 server, and here is my xbmc.log :
Code:
WARNING: CRenderSystemDX::CreateDevice - initial wanted device config failed
FATAL: CApplication::Create: Unable to init rendering system

And I try to launch XMBC from RDP.

I can't fix that and use other way to launch XBMC, any issue ?
Thanks Wink

Hi,

try it using a vnc connection, this should work.

While connected via rdp just have a look at your device manager and look for your graphics card. Maybe you understand why it fails with rdp afterwards.
