Same thing with me. I just now got around to installing XBMC on my Apple TV 2 with the 4.3 update. No MKV file that I've tried so far will work... it crashes immediately. Same with MP4 files, even. I installed the "no update" fix, which did keep XBMC from crashing after five or so minutes with normal AVI files, but I still can't play anything else.
Log files didn't tell me much either. Ends with:
19:59:55 T:263499776 M: 71770112 NOTICE: Opening video stream: 0 source: 256 19:59:55 T:263499776 M: 71770112 NOTICE: Creating video codec with codec id: 28 19:59:55 T:263499776 M: 71770112 DEBUG: CDVDFactoryCodec: compiled in hardware support: VDADecoder:no VideoToolBoxDecoder:yes CrystalHD:no OpenMax:no 19:59:55 T:263499776 M: 71770112 INFO: Apple VideoToolBox Decoder... 19:59:55 T:263499776 M: 71770112 DEBUG: FactoryCodec - Video: vtb - Opening
Then it dies. Quite unfortunate. I don't know what else to do. |

Be quick, Apple is still signing for 4.2.1. See the off-topic section. MediaInfo : http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/ Do not e-mail XBMC-Team members directly asking for support. I am having similar issues, 720p files are not playing (tested MKV and mp4 so far). I've disabled subtitles for all files and tried editing the hosts file as described above.
I just picked up my ATV2 today and jailbroke it with Seas0nPass. From what I've read it seems that 4.3 is the reason, if you have 4.2.1 I think it might work. Not sure if a downgrade is possible as I didn't do any sort of backup before doing the jailbreak. Standard def videos seem to work just fine. Edit: I did some research on downgrading to an earlier version of iOS, I do not think it is possible to do this (for me at least...). I did not save any "SHSH Blobs" or anything, so maybe that's why. I've also read that trying out some nightly builds of XBMC might fix this, but I'm haven't yet found version/build to try out.

Ok FYI I now have mkv 720p videos working, I updated to the latest nightly build. I did not watch the video all the way through but it played fine and my ATV didn't crash like usual. I followed these instructions: http://www.sinfuliphone.com/showthread.php?t=71278. It is heavily warned that you should not use a nightly build and expect everything to work. I just tested mkv playback and that was definitely fixed (so far, have not played video from start to finish).
Anyways I guess the TL;DR would be the next xbmc update for ATV2 should fix HD playback, if you're able to downgrade to 4.2.1 that might fix your problem in the interim, or try out an unstable nightly build. |

Thanks, I will do that. From my understanding this will allow iOS devices to be backed up to older firmwares (assuming the SHSH Blog was saved for that device for that firmware). It has to be done for each firmware right?
Btw for an update: I watched a 4.3GB 720p MKV file all the way through (streaming via SMB from a Win 7 machine) last night, so as far as that is concerned it seems to be working.
