Question about service addon functionality

Hey!

Is it going to be possible to have a background service that's independent of the front end GUI. For e.g, I'd like to have a google chat service receiving notifications in the background, which open incoming chat windows, but I'd also like to be able to launch the GUI by clicking on the addon to allow initiation of chats from xbmc. But preferably all through the same addon, so the user doesn't have to install 2 separate add-ons for this functionality...

Is this possible?
