Some pointers for a 4.1 AppleTV2
#1
Ok I just got a ATV2 and in the software version it says it is 4.1.1 I assume this means that it is iOS 4.1 and not 4.2? if so does that mean that is can be booted untethered once Jailbroken? I noticed on the main page is said that XBMC will run on 4.1.

I was going to update it to 4.2 because I was going to follow the instructions on this thread.

http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=91490

I do have all windows machines here at home but, I have access to several macs from friends and work.

I did come across this method this morning.:
http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=12380

This looks like it is a untethered 4.1 jailbreak. could I do what is in this one then just folllow the steps for installing XBMC found here:
http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Ins...MC_on_ATV2

Also of note I find the Limera1nRC1b that claims to break all iOS 4.2 devices from windows. anyone tried it?

This is stated in a couple articles.. if we could get the wiki editing unlocked, i could finally update this in the wiki..
4.1.1 on the appletv is iOS 4.2.1

Ya.. Except for the whole part about adding awkwardtv.list or else you cant even install xbmc...
At this time, the only reason to jailbreak the apple tv is to install xbmc... why wouldn't you put a quick blurp that 4.0 is iOS 4.1 and 4.1.1 is iOS 4.2.1 ... hell you even have links on the wiki on how to jailbreak it... the whole point of a wiki is to be an ultimate reference guide so people dont ask the same questions over and over again... So if it saves the forum an additional 10 threads on the same topic.. why exactly shouldn't it be added to the wiki?

You couldn't add a line on the wiki that states that 4.1.1 on the atv2 is iOS 4.2.1? That doesn't really have anything to do with jailbreaking.

I really miss althekiller :(

JB with pwnagetool doesnt add awkwardtv.list , will add this to wiki

we dont do JB, link is there and that should be enough for everyone. xbmc is not the only reason to JB your ATV2, maybe it is for you, but it was done befor XBMC was ported to it

the linkes aren't enough because people don't see 4.2.1 on their appletv.. all they see is 4.1.1

just to clarify the above , the reason you are not seeing awkwardtv.list is that your ATV2 was JB using PwnageTool which doesn't add awkwardtv.list, Seas0nPass does, that's why we were seeing mixed results.

nevertheless, wiki is updated and still locked Smile

Can you do me one more favor.. Just retype all of the " " manually ... One of them (and i forgot which) is an unknown character in terminal and will default back to . .

amet,
Thank you for the update.

For the sake of clarity, I wanted to point out that there are two different style of quotes symbol in the wiki.

Code:
$ echo “deb http://apt.awkwardtv.org/ stable main” > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/awkwardtv.list

$ echo "deb http://mirrors.xbmc.org/apt/atv2 ./" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/xbmc.list

I suspect copy and pasting will error out because of this, which will lead to an influx of problem reports in the coming days if not rectify.

Thanks again.
