I'm not in need of an HTPC, don't have to record anything, not interested into scrapers...
It just have to play my movies from my pc's share, they are mostly HD rips 720p H264/x264 MKVs.
And I need to play my itunes mp3 library.
Now my old xbox is just perfect, just need some more power for HD...

if it was able to manage in a decent way mp3s libraries also a WD TVHD Live would have been enough...
But mp3 library on my living room HT is a must... and XBMC does it just perfectly... I'm in need of HD player for my movies :-)
i'm right now looking if 802.11n wi-fi will really be enough for 720p movies...

do you know if I can check somewhere the compatibility between my cisco router N and ATV2 ?
normally all wi-fi should be compatible as it is a standard but you know... is from apple... -.-!

For me, I'm watching 1080P MKV files through Wifi share in my HTPC, without any problem, but as you said, make sure about Apple box that can handle your requirement.
