Extending IR Dongle to 20 ft?

Hello,

I have this remote and Dongle from Newegg:

I have recently moved my HTPC into a cabinet that will be about 20 ft. from where I want the reciever dongle to be located. I tried buying 2 10 ft. usb extender cables and connecting them together along with the dongle, but my pc will not recognize the dongle using this method.
Does anyone know of an inexpensive solution to extending a usb cable over a length of about 20 ft.?
Has anyone tried this solution that uses a cat5e cable as an extender? :

Is there an inexpensive usb wireless extender that may be available?

I should note that there is not an electrical outlet where the dongle will be located.

Thanks,
Mark

I have a webcam hooked up to my PC and a PS3 eye both with a single 15' usb extension cable. Both work great. I would think trying a single cable, preferably one with ferrite at the ends, would offer you the best solution.

Failing that, a powered hub should help.

A1: In practice, the USB specification limits the length of a cable between full speed devices to 5 meters (a little under 16 feet 5 inches). For a low speed device the limit is 3 meters (9 feet 10 inches).
You need to put a hub in between the two cables you have, or get one of those "active" usb cables, which is basically a usb cable with a one port hub at the end.
Secondly, check if your cable doesn't have iron inside, I have a cheap one from dealexteme that does, magnets stick to it, iron as a conductor is completely useless for any reasonable amount of current.
