I ran a brightness and contrast test pattern on my ATV2 via XBMC yesterday and noticed that it is clipping black and white (not a full clip, but clips RIGHT at reference black and reference white (16 for black and 235 for white)).
I am going to guess that it is actually the ATV2 causing the clipping and not XBMC. I am honestly not sure what range the ATV2 sends out, YPBPR (which is what I would want), or RGB (which can have a high range or low range). I have read that in iOS 4.3 apple is adding the function to be able to select the video output range, so this may be a moot point.
