i am trying to use my htpc only with the remote and need the OSD for that. Now I have tried mapping remote key to <osd> in Lircmap.xml but no cookie. Any suggestions?

According to the default remote keymap, menu will bring up the OSD.

According to the default Lircmap, menu is the DVD button.

Read the wiki about using Lircmap to understand the relationship between your LIRC buttons and XBMC functions and you should be able to get it going.
