OpenElec - everything worked out of the box for me! - installs off USB, boots in seconds.

try the 2.7 aeon mq2 version it got really fast!! (compact mode on an old dualcore 2.2ghz amd with win7 really smooth!! even my zbox can nearly handle it)
but ssd or hd doesnt make a hughe difference to the skin. its speeds up ever skin while browsing movies a bit. honestly i dont really notice a big aprovement from my "normal" pc with an ssd to the similar "gaming" htc without ssd.
i was able to compare my zbox hd11 with a similar zbox i build for a friend once. mine with an agility 2 ssd other one with an old laptop 2.5 hd. ssd: 23 sec boot time to win7 laptop 70 seconds. but while scrolling to menues and movies its a pretty even performance in my opinion. but i would always go for an ssd because its noiseless and with 30gb not much more expensive.
