Windows Home Server and XMBC
#1
I'm running Windows Home server.
I have a Gigabit network.

When I'm trying to stream a mkv (blue ray) or large AVI file the video is choppy or lags.

When I play the file from the local hardware it's fine.

So my hardware is good, my network is hyper fast. Whats the problem?

Is there something I need to do to my home server?

When I try to play the files from my Linux box, they start and then I get the connection is refused? I'm stuck on how to move forward on troubleshooting.

Is this a networking problem? a file type problem? a problem with blueray rips... Windows Home Server.

what do I need to check next?

I had alot of issues with my XBMC/WHS setup recently with buffering/lag.
After working smoothly for quite some time.

Wound up being a Defrag issue. Perfect Disk 11 addin for WHS saved me, not sure if that will be your issue or not. (There is a 30 day trial I used to test it) Also I have read that you need to disable folder duplication in your "Shared Folder" properties, as this can cause hiccups.

Here are a couple of links that helped me a lot! (2nd link is on my home laptop, I will check when I get home if I still have it, and if you are still looking for help)

Often related to demigrator.exe (this is what manages folder duplication). You can set a script so it only runs at night (as when it kicks on, it often causes jitters/lag).

However, your issue sounds worse than that... as if it is unwatchable at all times?

Try doing a network speed test; you may have gigabit network hardware but something could be working incorrectly.

A total guess, but I had issues recently that were related to the MTU.
