I been using XBMC for awhile but not sure which is the best way to update the program. ie. to ensure I am running a latest version to get all the benefits.

Looked through the guides but couldn't find anything. Can some one advise?

If you're using the latest release from http://xbmc.org/download/ that's all you should need. Watch this forum to see when new versions are released.

It's possible to install nightly builds from http://mirrors.xbmc.org/nightlies/, but these may be buggy and are best avoided unless you like living on the edge!

So if I have it installed I just have to reinstall the program. Is there no way to go to an update to the current issue? In other words you cant run an update over the currently installed software? Hopefully I have confused you?

reinstalling is basically your 'update' - settings wont be overwritten

As cotdagoo says, just run the setup for current version and it will upgrade the previous version.

Having said that, I usually uninstall the previous version first, but then I do lots of testing and want to make sure the previous version is completely gone. Unless you're running in portable mode, the XBMC settings are stored separately from the XBMC program so you can uninstall the program without losing your settings. With the Dharma setup (I can't remember if this is true for v9.11) the uninstall asks you if you want to delete your settings as well, and the default is *not* to delete your settings.

If you want to backup your settings press Windows-R on the keyboard, type %appdata% into the Run dialog and click OK. This will open an Explorer window, and one of the folders shown in that window is XBMC. All your settings are stored in this folder so you can copy it somewhere safe and if necessary copy it back later.
