I'm seeing a median of around 1.5 and max of 3-4 with th WNDR3400. If this ever becomes a bottleneck for playback (hasn't yet with 2 x 1080p medium bitrate streams) I'll either dust off my old BriteView CinemaTube and repurpose it as a USB NAS Server or just buy a PogoPlug.

Just bought that one myself 3 days ago and love it so far.

Coming from the $100 dollar netgear wndr3700 I like this D link better.

Wndr3700 kept loosing connection 3-5 times a day so needed constant reboots.. Dlink one has been going 3 days straight with connection 24/7 no reboot needed.

If you want to use the routers usb port with an external hard drive
1) make sure the hard drive has it's own power, otherwise you'll end up overpowering the routers power supply
2) Format HDD to ext3 using a copy of linux and using Gparted. You can create an ubuntu linux on a usb drive to make this easy.

With the ext3 disk format you'll be getting speeds 5-9MB/s read/write
