XBMC's multiple fanarts support: thumb display only?

I've done lots of searches on this topic and just want to be clarified on this issue.

My intended behavior: Having multiple fanarts for the same movie rotate like a slide show (with customized interval) or randomly when the movie is selected.

I came to a conclusion that this is plain impossible in XBMC, am I right?

I've learned to put the extra fanarts in the extrathumbs folder and name them thumb1 thumb2 etc, however the only time they will be utilized is through some skin's certain view types where they will be displayed as small thumbnails. As far as XBMC itself is concerned, there will only be one fanart per movie.

Is my understanding correct?

Correct. You can use skin hacks to do what you want, but they're completely unsupported and will not work in all cases.

Is there any plan to add the ability to rotate through the different backdrops?

Night, Neon and several others (T! I think) support this.
