Questions from a Noob, programs etc.

I have been doing a lot of research prior to throwing together my XBMC machine and the part that I am having the most trouble with at first is what program to use to RIP my DVD collection. I know to use HANDBRAKE to encode to MKV containers but I am having a hard time finding a good program to rip the DVD's to my computer originally.

I have tried DVD shrink which is alright except I don't like the fact that it compresses the videos prior to encoding I do however like the speed at which it rips.

I tried using DVDFab and ripping to ISO format cause I figured that would keep the quality prior to the encoding process? Am I wrong about this process?

Also both of those problems were having some trouble ripping newer movies i.e The Other Guys. I know this is a long post but as you can see I have had a ton of questions and with all my research I have done looking in various forums I have grown frustrated and would just like some direct feedback.

I would prefer freeware but if there are no legitimate options then I will be willing to pay for shareware.

Also in HANDBRAKE what are the ideal settings some of you use? I haven't been able to tell a difference too much no matter how extreme I adjust the settings. Again any feedback would be great, I am excited to be a member of this community.

If there is already a detailed thread somewhere about the details of this stuff then please point me in that direction. I want to get underway with this project but I want to make sure I do it right the first time.

If all you're worrying about is DVD's then makemkv is your 1-stop shop. It'll rip the DVD to an exact copy mkv file all in two steps. You'll have the option to choose main and other titles before it does so.

You don't need to worry about transcoding with Handbrake if all you want if HQ copy of the DVD's. I use HB to xcode bluray rips for instance...I don't bother with DVD's; just us makemkv.
If I helped out pls give me a +

A bunch of XBMC instances, big-ass screen in the basement + a 20TB FreeBSD, ZFS server.

i prefer using anyDVD with Handbrake. it allows you to convert straight from the DVD without having to make an iso or any other files first..

You can prevent dvd shrink from compressing by simply choosing dvd-9 or custom size to encode iso to.

alternatively, if you just want a complete dvd iso, you can use anydvd by itself (rip to iso or folder), or anydvd + imgburn to rip to iso or folder.
