Connect to your atv, copy the userdata folder to your pc, then copy it back after you are done upgrading.

Sorry but what exactly is backed up when copying the userdata folder?

Are all add-ons, add-on settings, skins, libraries, preferences, MySQL settings, library symlinks, etc. backed up? Will I end up with the exact same configuration, or will I need to set up something again.

Problem is that I was learning as I was setting it all up, and will have a hard time remembering exactly all the steps I took.

Yes, you will end up with the same configuration.
The userdata folder contains all your settings and add-ons, thumbnails, etc.

But as has been mentioned....dont change anything yet because there are issues with the new untethered jb.

I'd just stick with 4.2 or 4.2.1 until an update that includes features you really want comes out, and then you can back up to your computer and re import your settings.

No worries about that... I am definitely going to wait. Don't fix what's not broken...

I am almost tempted to buy a second ATV just to test it out (after all bugs are fixed). If it works, I will update and give the new one to my sister or something.

Im running 4.3.1(4.2.1) on a tethered JB and its much smoother and nicer than 4.2.1(4.1.1)

On the old firmware I was getting stutters and ATV freezing while playing .avi but since updating last night to 4.3.1(4.2.1) I watched some .avi and nothing, perfectly smooth.

Only thing I did notice was that playing .mkv I had to disable ac3 sound otherwise it cased some really bad noise.

But with AC3 disabled its awesome, no stutter and no bad sound.
