My setup is freenas 11 with SMB share and I had same issue- credentials request poping out on unrestricted share.

I just changed the settings "force guest access" in SMB settings under advanced.
Since that It works.

if your connecting via a network youll need to firstly map the drive (AND issue a username/password to that drive).
I myself had to do this (using T95Z PLUS tvbox connected to my network) Harddrive connected without a problem ..UNTIL I UPDATED KODI TO THE LATEST VERSION ... NOW I CANT CONNECT TO MY HARDDRIVE AT ALL.
VERY UPSETTING ... Kodi keeps saying ...
"Software caused connection abort" (& next screen says) ... "couldnt connect to network server"

Tried all these recommendations above without success.
IM NOT IMPRESSED.
