it does update itself if the library has been updated or if the watched/unwatched count has been changed

I've marked videos as watched and it didn't change until a reboot.

To be quite honest, no. This is a temporary solution until we have arbitrary retrieving of folders hooked up (then you can just create smartplaylists and away you go).
Always read the XBMC online-manual, FAQ and search the forum before posting.
