chromecast

Just watched the Google breakfast launch (http://www.youtube.com/google) and was suitably impressed with the Chromecast device (http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/07/g...o-your-tv/) and it looks like it's slated for distribution in the next week and at the price, suspect it will be a market winner.

Obvious question is will XBMC fit into this device as neatly and where does that leave Yatse or the official XBMC remote and do we still need software overlays at all?

FTA: Now that Google has let its $35 Chromecast streaming HDMI dongle out of the bag at its breakfast event, it's gonna need developers to chip in some apps for it. To help boost that, it's launched the Googel Cast SDK to help those folks bring content from mobile and the web to TVs. By using the kit, developers won't need to build new applications for the big screen from scratch, they'll just need to make a few tweaks to their existing mobile apps.

New $35 HDMI dongle from Google.

So... Streaming from XBMC in my living room to the TV in my bedroom, using the official XBMC Android/iOS app to navigate. Possible?

Seems to lack support for watching local content, but surely some workaround is possible. I hope.

GoogleCast SDK available, link below (thanks!)

It's worth pointing out that the SDK is only for Android, iOS, and Chrome.

I was kind of wondering the same thing. To me it looks like an XBMC rip-off lol. But, at the same time, having that tight of an integration would be really cool. Question I've got is : is there a way to tap in to this, and make it think XBMC is a chrome cast, and send the data to XBMC instead lol.

The tab browsing portion did look really good. That's something I've been wishing we could do in XBMC for a while !

I'll have a look at the SDK and see what's in there !

Eric.

Similar to airplay support. This might be more complicated. I doubt the API is open (yet) and there may be some DRM that might be insurmountable. Will require additional research first.

Emulate a chromecast receiver to play video from chromecast enabled sites (netflix, youtube, others)

Open source, could be good, some are already talking about rooting it which begs the question if it's open source.. why root? Slash users talk http://tech.slashdot.org/story/13/07/24/...chromecast

nice find Sialivi....looks like they are emulating a chrome browser on the stick and are making it open to have other make receivers:

https://developers.google.com/cast/devel...r_receiver

SWEET! *shouldn't* be impossible then...would need to read over the page in more details...perhaps tonight.

It's worth pointing out that the SDK is only for Android, iOS, and Chrome.

So the official XBMC apps could be updated to point towards the user's XBMC installation as a local server of "online" content, right? This is how it works for me currently with Airplay sharing that XBMC currently supports, if I understand it correctly.

Merged two threads. Also, I'm now taking bets on the countdown until a dev gets XBMC to report as a Chromecast receiver. I'm placing the over/under at 2 months from today. Smile

oh god, This would be perfect for me. since I just watch XBMC on my laptop and phone only. Would love an option to stream it to my tv with ease and wireless.
no more lugging my hard drive and laptop to the living room and plugging in the hdmi cable!

Am i right in thinking this way? also 1080p streaming?

(understand it just launched, just thinking of the possibility)

Technically, that's probably possible with this. But as an aside : why don't you just get some low-cost media player that's always connected to the TV ? That way you wouldn't need to haul all that stuff out every time ? Just saying Smile

Indeed. My current solution is a jailbroken aTV2 with a separate installation of XBMC. Watched/unwatched is not synced across devices and the library as a whole is often out of date (never got around to setting it up the "proper" way).

If I can ditch my cumbersome setup for a $35 device that works out of the box, I will in a heartbeat. MANY others would too, I'm sure.

Lack of power outlets and I have grown a hatred for clutter and wires. If this thing works with XBMC my wishes have been met and I can stream to the tv in my bedroom to living room and I can take it to a friends house! ......also wireless! and I hate the hassle of setting up and maintaining.

This just seems so noob friendly and my own mother could use it! Also multiple uses as it works with android phones. All round perfect device for me.

Supported media types :-/

On the fly transcoding or convert my entire library? I'm not thrilled about either option...
