I briefly tried the setting for autodownload first subtitle but it started interfering with the Screensaver videos so I decided to turn it off. Surprise surprise, it wont stay disabled... Is there an ini file or xml file I could look into to disable it manually?

Look for <setting id="subtitles.downloadfirst" default="true">false</setting> in the guisettings.xml file found in your userdata folder.

I edited the string from default "true" setting to "false" and it just switched it back to true like it was nothing

You'll need to do it while Kodi is closed down.

I did , I even restarted the shield just for good measure and it wont change the option. It shows up as disabled in the UI but the xml file still is set as "True". Its really bugging me ...

It should look like this <setting id="subtitles.downloadfirst" default="true">false</setting> when disabled.
