Does this SDK being released mean anything? Might we see quicker development of Chromecast functionality in XBMC now? I am dreaming of the day I can scrap my AppleTV and Rokus and just cast from XBMC installed on phones/tablets. I would just point XBMC on every device to my NAS device, and be done with it, if Chromecast can handle receiving video like that.

Just made a thread about that a couple of days/weeks earlier. I would LOVE to use XBMC chromecast that'd make it so easy to set up for tablet users

The thing that exasperates me about chromecast and the hype that surrounds it is all the woolly thinking.
Are we talking about an SDK that allows random applications to stream to a chromecast device? (cue, google selling more hardware)
Or are we talking the ability for random applications to appear like chromecast hardware? (cue, my android device can utilise upnp to my xbmc application anyway).

I'm confused by the attention chromecast is getting especially on here. I tried one my Dad got at xmas. If I had never had a networked media player or XBMC I would be interested...but I have...for years and years. It did waaaayyyyyy less than a £40 android box.
Browsing and selecting content from another device seems like a plus side to what I have already, not something to replace it with. I guess it's just not for me.
Give me a dedicated device for each display everytime.
Is there something I'm not seeing?

I would like totally appreciate chromecast support also, especially for Android so I can cast from my phone and tablet.

I can't speak for everyone, but I do think the following use case would be a good start and should be relatively easy to implement (AFAIK, but I'm not a developer):
Allow XBMC (Gotham) to send content to the Chromecast with the "Play Using" feature. So if I have XBMC on a mobile device, I can select a movie from my library and use the Play Using action from the context menu to select my Chromecast and send the content to it. This would require support for the DIAL protocol and I believe this is possible for *most* content without transcoding. However there would be notable exceptions like MPEG2 (I believe) which is not supported natively by Chromecast. It's not a perfect solution, but it would be helpful for a lot of users.
Alternately, people can wait for Mediabrowser3 to implement this, which I think is in progress and will include transcoding for unsupported formats.

I agree with some of the other posts that chromecast may be a bit over-hyped.
Having said this, a chromecast receiver for xbmc would be quite nice. Would allow the mirroring of my browser content (and hopefully soon more) that unfortunately was not supported by the airplay receiver.

Definitely agree that it's overhyped, especially given the fact that an Android stick can serve as an XBMC receiver already (and more) at a similar price and form factor. That said, the Chromecast is quite cheap and it's a known quantity. In contrast, those Android sticks require some research because they're a little hit or miss.
