White Screen on 720p MKV Content - webfart - 2008-02-13

I have LXBMC installed on an old P4 2.8ghz with 768 Megs of RAM, and a Quattro NVS280 video card. All videos, menus, etc work fine. Whenever I try to run a 720p MKV file, the screen goes white, but I do get sound. I am also able to access info screens and see them fine. The clip plays fine with mplayer outside of XBMC. Any ideas?

opengl 1.3? not gonna cut it

PCI is tough. You don't have a PCI-e or AGP slot? If not, here's a geforce 5200 PCI for $35. It supports opengl 2.0.

I was reading other users experiences with even older video cards. What I understood is that there was no hardware acceleration, and that the video cards were just drawing the GUI. Others have reported being able to watch 720p with no issues on cards that don't support the OpenGL2. If I am mistaken, let me know.

According to Newegg the 5200 only supports OpenGL 1.4, is this corrected with drivers?

- rodalpho - 2008-02-13

According to nvidia it does support opengl 2.0.

it's not so much about drivers as about what the hw supports... opengl is extremely modular and can expose newer features through extensions even in older api versions

Post your xbmc.log file and also the output of 'glxinfo'.

The link to the 5200 is for the GO model. The desktop model only supports 1.4 I will post logs when I get home. Has anyone else has any luck with 720p content with OpenGl 1.3 or 1.4 hardware?

You really want at least a NVIDIA GeForce 6 Series (codenamed NV40), sixth generation of GeForce graphics chipsets as they support OpenGL 2.0 and Shader Model 3.0

Do you not have a AGP or PCIe slot available?

There are GeForce 6200 available in PCI format:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geforce_6200#GeForce_6200_PCI_.28NV44.29_without_TurboCache

Examples:
3D FUZION GEFORCE 6200 PCI
Albatron GeForce 6200A 128MB PCI
Club3D (Club-3D) GEFORCE 6200 128MB DDR PCI
GeForce 6200 LP 256MB DDR PCI LOW PROFILE
PNY Verto GeForce 6200 256MB DDR PCI
BFG Technologies GEFORCE 6200 PCI
EVGA GEFORCE 6200 PCI
Sparkle GeForce 6200 128MB

Aha, nice catch. I figured that any card supporting DX9 (although the geforce5's support is pretty tentative) would do OGl2.0.

Newegg has 6200 PCI cards available for like $50. Grab one of those instead.

I have an AGP slot. I actually got ahold of a ATI FireGL x3. THis definatly supports everything thats needed, just a matter of getting the drivers going. Do you guys think this is a good idea?

Hardware is good enough, ...the only question is if the ATI drivers is good enough (yet), try Envy:

The ATI linux drivers are pretty crappy. If you have a choice, cancel the order and go nvidia. If you got a great deal or it was free then sure, give it a shot.

Thanks for all the help guys!
