"Operation not permitted" OFTEN when adding source from SMB - User 439276 - 2019-09-04

This is really frustrating me.
[The problem is summarised in the picture. Note: the PC I'm trying to access over the network is an XP * one]

SETUP:

1) Kodi on PC (via USB stick: LibreElec)
2) Windows XP* PC has all the MOVIES on external drives

PROBLEM:

1) I've successfully set up an SMB share, grabbing files from the Xp PC.

2) But about 70% of the time, when I'm trying to add a VIDEO SOURCE using FILES, it says 'Operation not Permitted'.
(Videos > Files > Add videos > Browse > tap on the SMB share)

3) Sometimes when I OPEN a source folder it also fails to access it

4) Often I can get it to work if I SUSPEND for a couple of seconds

EXTRA INFO:

* The LibreElec PC has a blue cable going straight to router
* That router has wifi network which the media-source XP PC is connected to.
* I also have a wifi-dongle in the LibreElec PC, because Im not sure if perhaps it needs it, to connect to the XP PC

Oh btw, I'm absolutely loving Kodi - it's literally changed my life.
I've started watching movies again.

ADDING SOURCES: what's the difference between FILE MANAGER and VIDEO SOURCES? - User 439276 - 2019-09-06

I'm trying to solve a problem with my shares, and want to avoid duplication of effort OR do things better.

Can someone pls tell me the difference between ADDING a source under:
System/Settings  > File Manager < ADD SOURCE
and
Videos >  Files > ADD VIDEOS

In particular, I mean adding a folder with movies/tv shows in it.

If you want to scan for movies/tv, do you have to add in videos AND File Manager?

My main problem is that I sometimes can't add a source with EITHER method or videos won't play,
because of intermittent connection problems returning errors like:
"operation not permitted"
and other networky sounding errors

I had similar problems, and it took place randomly: sometimes, a share can't be read, and then can after I wait a while or reboot the player and/or server.

I think the server sometimes can't deliver all of the shares on time such that Kodi reports that it can't read them. I noticed that the problem is minimized when I use FTP or when shares come from a dedicated server, like an old media player now being used only for that and has only one hard drive in it.
