RE: [RELEASE] Rom Collection Browser - Browse and launch emulator game ROMs - phs989 - 2013-08-05

Thanks malte

My knowledge of Linux is limited to zero but i understand the premise of placing the relevant files in the relevant path e.g. /usr/bin/zsnes but am i required to simply place the .exe file into this path?

Part of the advice is also to edit the configuration file ~/.zsnes/zsnesl.cfg but as i only have the .exe file im unaware of how i create a config file?

Thanks in advance for assistance with this... just some fine tuning im sure and i will be set...

It seems you're following instructions for Windows but running Linux (or the opposite). That won't work.

If you're running Linux, hopefully Ubuntu, I can help you out. Are you?

Thanks arbrandes, Yes correct i am actually running xbmcbuntu and have little to no knowledge of it... i have been able to install aptitude and wine from the repositories and then in turn i installed zsnes (for SNES) as this is in the repositories but i am not understanding how to install an external .exe file into xbmcbuntu architecture.

I am using ROM Collection Browser and i tested the SNES setup last night and it worked so i know that i am installing everything correctly once i have the emulators setup correctly.

Can you advise?

While you can use windows emulators via wine I would use native Linux ports. Kega fusion is available for Linux and so is mednafen which will play nes, SNES and many more.

Thanks teeedubb. Are you saying that Kega fusion and madnafen are already within the xbmcbuntu repositories so i can just install? what would be the action i need? sudo aptitude install kega?

Is there anything that handles MAME too?

RE: [RELEASE] Rom Collection Browser - Browse and launch emulator game ROMs - teeedubb - 2013-08-06

I don't think kega is but a older version of mednafen should be. That command is correct but its probably easier to use the synaptic package manager. There should be something for mame too, search for it in synaptic.

Thanks for the help.

It would be great to know how to install an external emulator into xbmcbuntu though if this is necessary to do so.

can anyone advise?

Which emulator? There are a fair few already in the Ubuntu repositories, but they are generally older releases. If you want newer versions you will need to compile if you can't find a .deb or a ppa.

I have installed the following:

SNES - zsnes
NES - fceu

And i want to use/install the following:

Master System - Mednafen
Genesis - Gen/GS
MAME - MAME
Gameboy Advance - Mednafen
Nintendo 64 - Mupen64 Plus

How do i install them?

RE: [RELEASE] Rom Collection Browser - Browse and launch emulator game ROMs - teeedubb - 2013-08-06

Is mednafen and mame not in the Ubuntu repos? I'm not at home so I can't check. If so install them via synaptic package manager or via command line 'sudo apt-get install mednafen'.

Looks like mupen64plus is in the Ubuntu repos too

RE: [RELEASE] Rom Collection Browser - Browse and launch emulator game ROMs - phs989 - 2013-08-06

Thanks teeedubb

Ive searched in the ubuntu repos and established that the following are ready to install.

MAME - mame
Genesis - mess
Nintendo 64 - mupen64plus
Master System - mednafen
Gameboy Advance - mednafen
NES - fceu
SNES - zsnes

Mednafen does nes and SNES too. Mednafen is great and I use it for ad much as possible as configuration is easy as you can just copy and paste settings between systems, and as a nice bonus it emulates the systems really well. Smile

.exe files are Windows-specific: they won't run natively on Linux. Though you could try to use Wine to run them, as far as emulators go Linux is well served by native ones. This is what I use:

* NES: mednafen (available from Ubuntu repos)
* SMS: mednafen
* Gameboy: mednafen
* Gameboy Advance: mednafen
* SNES: snes9x-gtk (available from this PPA: https://launchpad.net/~bearoso/+archive/ppa)
* Genesis: gens (available from playdeb: http://www.playdeb.net/software/Gens)
* PSX: pcsxr (available from Ubuntu repos)
* Wii: dolphin-emu (available from this PPA: https://launchpad.net/~glennric/+archive/dolphin-emu)

That said, I do use Wine to run some Windows games off of RCB, such as Outrun 2006 or Marvel Ultimate Alliance.

RE: [RELEASE] Rom Collection Browser - Browse and launch emulator game ROMs - xxsunshinexx - 2013-08-06

I'm running RCB 2.0.7 on xbmc-12.2-3.fc18.x86_64 on Fedora 18 and am encountering weird issues launching Rom Collection Browser.

I can launch it, select a game, run it in my emulator of choice (FCEUX), and exit out of that back to XBMC just fine the first or second time I try. Then, on subsequent attempts, I cannot launch Rom Collection Browser. Note that I'm not saying I cannot launch my emulator -- I can't even get that far, I can't get XBMC to launch Rom Collection Browser after it's been opened once or twice.

The only fix I've found is to quit XBMC, reopen XBMC, and try again. I can launch Rom Collection Browser on the first try every time, but subsequent attempts fail and I have to restart XBMC.

I've put a debug log here: http://pastebin.com/ktqMrP2c that includes me starting RCB, loading a ROM in FCEUX, playing for a short bit and exiting, then attempting to launc RCB again within XBMC. RCB works the first time, then fails with no debug log entries that I can see, at 17:09:20 in the linked debug log.

Any suggestions or things I could provide to facilitate debugging?

Thanks arbrandes

I have successfully installed SNES, NES and Master System so far using mednafen, fceu and zsnes and now i have an additional question. When i load the games through ROM Collection Browser they work and run but with all of them they load in the top left of the screen and only take approx 15-25% of the screen space and are fully aligned to the top left of the screen.

Is there any way to increase the size of the games on the screen so that i can maximise the viewable area? I cant easily see a way of doing this and within xbmcbuntu it certainly isnt obvious but can anyone assist?
