So i've got a new samusng 3DTV! I've got a little 3D content, half SBS, plays perfectly from XBMC. All good, all HD .mkv content.

I enjoy the high quality of the Blueray content, but I notice that all the SBS media is only a half the size of a normal high def blueray file.

I have a 2d version of Avatar, close to 30gb in size. I can find hald SBS versions but only about 12gb in size. So clearly the half SBS stuff is of a lower quality.

Q1 Are the 3D movies from the Bluray disk, better in quality that the half SBS versions out in the wild now?

Q2 If the BD disc is going to give me better quality 3D, can I use a 3D BD disk image (i realise the may need to be mounted with Daemon Tools) and play it, in 3D, from XBMC?

Thanks if you can answer.

Answer 1: Yes 3d bluray is much better quality than half SBS. In fact half SBS is half the resolution of 3d bluray.

Answer 2: Yes, you can mount the iso with some sort of virtual drive, like Daemon tools or others, but you will need to launch an external player like TMT5 or PowerDVD.

Hope that helps.

While I'm at it here is another 3d question I have:

I am currently using a pre-Eden nightly. I have a collection of movies that are mostly mkv, iso, and blu-ray folders, all of which are played flawlessly with the new build. I also have a small collection of 3d bluray isos. A few of the 3d isos play perfectly in 2d without using any external player. But it seems most of them have a small problem where they start out and play the first few minutes, then they restart and play about 20 minutes then restart. Now I know that this build is probably not even supposed to play a 3d bluray, but is there any way the built in player could handle this task (in 2d)? I don't mind using TMT5 to play the movies in 3d, but TMT5 has serious issuses playing a 3d bluray in 2d. Most of the time I would rather just watch my movies in 2d without getting out the glasses. Not to mention it's just easier for the wife and kids.

Also while I'm asking difficult questions, is it possible for me to put a separate movie section just for 3d movies, and when I pick out of this section, have it launch an external player just for this section. While also having these movies listed in the general movies section, and having the XBMC player lauch out of this section?

Sorry for all the noob questions, just trying to see if I can make this perfect for my needs.

By the way, thanks for all the latest improvements to make XBMC so great. I can't wait for the AE branch to be merged into the nightlies so I can watch with DTS-HD/TRUE-HD.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks fot that. I might grab a Blueray image to check it out, more curious as much as anything and am eager to avoid having a real BD layer connected to the system.

I can't wait for Eden to get the HD audio support!

I would be curious as To how you get on with a 3D section, i would want the exact same thing.

Cheers

XBMC does NOT play 3D anyways and probably will be a couple of years before anyone does anything and considering its bluray forget it, you will need to use external players. Like its been said already.

As for true HD audio support its more to do with your hardware and setup than XBMC.

I can't wait for this latest 3D fad to blow over. Avatar and a few others might be an exception, but for the vast majority of 3D movies out there.. no thank you. The 3D versions, often done in post production, are horrible, distracting, headache inducing train wreaks.

There are 2 types of 3D, sequential and side-by-side : http://hd.engadget.com/2010/01/12/hd-101...y-side-3d/

3D content found on original disks are sequential, and XBMC cannot play that. SBS are used in TV broadcasts and more recently, in pirated rips. They are inferior quality compared to sequential . XBMC can playback SBS just fine, because it`s basically an 1080p image cut in half and duplicated.

Im with you but I think this turn of the fad will be around for a while..previous ones where to costly to last after the wow factor had faded, nowa days as most are done(faked) in post production it really doesn't cost anymore(except at the box office Smile ) Meh !!!!
