[RF] Microsoft ARC Keyboard
#1
Sup guys!
I just got this new Microsoft ARC Keyboard
to replace my Rii Mini that ended up not working very well,,,
actually, it never worked great form the beginning,,,
So i managed to sell it $50 and got myself a new wireless keyboard!

Image

Microsoft ARC Keyboard Looks real nice
and is fairly small and really compact!
the keyboard is just barely one foot wide,,,
very light too, weighing less than a pound!
It's powered by two AAA batteries (included)
and connects to your computer via a tiny nano RF receiver.
so far so good!
it hasn't missed a key press!
yoo hoo!!!!!!!
Anyhow, here's a mini review for all to enjoy!

#1. USB dongle needs to be in front of HTPC at least for me...
but dont get me wrong here,
you dont have to point at it like if you had an IR Remote..
you can be anywhere on the room and it'll just work!

#2. you dont really know if the keyboard is ON or OFF
till you try to type something,,,
i mean, there's no green light that stays on 4ever...
once you PowerON the keyboard using ESC+FN
light turns green, but vanishes after a bit,,,
so you like, ok, is this thing ON or OFF??
but i guess its a battery saving feature...
its not that bad though, you can just leave it ON 24/7
and then change batteries when they die,,,
I saw a user review online that said the batteries that came with the keyboard
lasted him almost 3 months....

#3. By mistake, if you hit the 'Caps Lock' key,
there's no way for you to know until you actually start typing and notice the Cap letters...
The 'Cap Lock' mode doesn't have a light indicator....
but again, might be a battery saving feature...

#4. takes sometime to get used to the bottom right arrow keys,
but never the less, its not a turn off at all,,,
it actually works really great!
but if your a gamer, it'll be a turn off 4sure,,,

#5. Dont really buy it if your thinking in holding it in your hand and thumb type,,
although very small, slim and very compact, its not meant for that at all..
its really meant for sitting on your Lap or couch....
but i guess some will still use it in air....
I've tried it myself and, i've actually gotten pretty good at it Tongue

#6. Not sure how far you can go for RF reception..
seems you cant go extremely far from your HTPC..
but overall, range is decent enough for me...
My couch is approximately ~15' from my HTPC and,
I haven't has a single issue with reception!!

#7. extremely glossy piano black finish,
looks really good, but its a fingerprint magnet lol

OverAll, not because i own it, but,
i truly believe its one of the BEST HTPC Keyboard one can get!
but i think its a matter of 2 things, if your a gamer or if you want a
keyboard u can hold in your hand and thumb type, then,
this isnt for you,,,
but for the rest, man, at $35 at buy.com,
its simply an amazing keyboard to have!

Are you sure its RF?? AFAIK RF doesn't need line of site to work (#1) and has pretty long range (#6).

Anyways...nice form factor for an HTPC keyboard. Thanks for the review.

oh yeah its definitely RF 110%!!
Thing is, i wasn't referring to line of sight sorry if i confused anybody,
i only meant the dongle needs to be in in front...
you dont have to point at it like an IR Remote works..
you can be anywhere on the room and it'll work!
Range is great! but not like 30 meters Tongue

a lot of times the RF transceiver is directional and that's why it's placement can make a difference.

depends on what u need, that logitech looks sweet too,
but i really wanted 'just' a keyboard and no mouse like functions
because i already have a Gyration Air Mouse for that and,
i want the keyboard to be as compact as it can...
Mouse function makes it wider...

Question about this keyboard:
Can you map a key to have it activate/open xbmc?

I ask because I use dual monitor (full screen xbmc on tv, computer on a monitor) and have a separate keyboard for just using the tv. Thus, if I want to go to my bed and use the Arc keyboard, xbmc might not be selected. Alt tab would work, but that requires a lot of guessing on how far to tab based on how many programs I have open.

I just started looking into this, and I noted that the Arc drivers don't really allow remapping of keys. So I'm also wondering what the best program to do so would be on a Windows computer.

Thanks!
