OK.. so got some advice from a friend and rather bought this vantec internal card.
Seems to be ID'd as a VT1720/24 [Envy24PT/HT] under the sound devices.
I have it connected via the optical cable to my amp and it can successfully output digital stereo, but no surround sound above that. In fact the profile settings only alllow stereo (over both digital or analogue).. nothing more.
Alsamixer has volume bars for all the channels so is this just a setting somewhere that I am missing?
