I've read threads on air playing native video from iPads and iPhones to Xbmc on the apple tv but what if I'm running xbmc on the iPad with the icefilms plugin and want to air play that video from mega upload to the apple tv.

If you want that - then patches for this are welcome - not possible at the moment

If you are on an iPad 2 with screen airplay mirroring, maybe, but iPad 2s with iOS 5 (that have the screen airplay mirror feature) can't be jailbroken yet.
In any case, it would just be easier to jailbreak the Apple TV 2 and run XBMC and other add-ons directly on it.
