I had the same red mute icon when i installed XBMC Constellation remote for iPad. I solved this problem with the following procedure:
- Press the - or + button on your remote (in my case is the XBMC Constellation for iPad/iPhone) on the atv2 XBMC home page. The red mute icon should disappear.
Hope this helps.

Welcome to the XBMC forums.
Have you tried the solution in the post right above yours? No guisettings.xml editing necessary.

Thanks everyone! I'm using AmazonFire and this totally worked so it's not system specific. My husband bypassed this thread because he didn't think it would work.
Great job and thanks again!

I tried the F8 key which is my computer volume key and it did not work. I tried turning up the volume while the movie played it did not work. But, I finally went to the analog side of my keyboard where the numbers are set up in a three by three format instead of the numbers above the letters on the keyboard and pressed the plus sign +, which is used for adding. It worked, don't know how but the mute button went away after trying everything else. So on a laptop it was my plus sign that took mute off and sound is back. Hope this helps, not too good with computers but good at trying everything until a solution is found.
