Upgrading my media server
#1
Thanks again to some folks on this forum, I succeeded to build a well-running media server with the following specs

Antec 1200 with Antec 1000W PSU
Asus X58 with i7 Bloomfield and U120E cooler
3*2GB DDR3 Ram
GTX 460 1GB
16*2TB WD 64M (hot-swappable in 4*4 units)
2*PCIe-1X SATA cards

There are 2 things, which I would love to upgrade and again would like to seek advice on this forum:

1) SSD drive - would like to add a SSD drive as boot device. Anyone knows whether this will require me to sacrifice one of my 16 disks as there may be no space / port left? If so, how would this work?

2) Upgrading my SATA cards - I am not happy with my SATA cards for 2 reasons: maybe once a month, they actually do not work properly, which results in the disks not being displayed / available. After a few re-boots. this issue goes away, but it is still annoying. Also, I believe that my current SATA cards do not support 3GB disks? While I am not 100% certain on this, it appears that only some disk slots allow me to use 3TB disks, while others limit me to 2TB. This may also be caused by the mother board? But my suspicion is the SATA cards?

Any thoughts? Help highly appreciated!!!

The sata cards (there chipset) will be the limiting factor in the 3tb battle...

you would likely see better transfer rates by using the ssd as a cache drive for your hard drives... as ultimately that is the point of a server not fast boot up...
maybe checkout intels SRT or fancycache/supercache if windows...

hope this helps
Love XBMC too check this -> HERE (Last Updated: 25/01/2012)

check out the xbmcmediacentre.com competition!

My hate campaign on optical discs started young, sorry I can't help it.
