Videos not playing back over SMB
#1
Hi,

Currently having a problem that my HTPC running XBMC 11.0 that it just wont play any videos from SMB from the host computer. I have recently re-installed windows on the host computer, re-shared the folders etc but now it doesn't work again. Worked perfectly fine before re-install of windows.

Nothing has changed software/hardware wise on the HTPC but host computer has changed CPU/mobo (reason for Windows re-install). XBMC has added to the folders to the library and such but whenever try and play it, it says "playback has failed." It does work sometimes but then it just doesn't work, no idea why it works and then doesn't. Tried to add the folders as a network folder and adding that but same thing happens both ways. have also tried reinstalling XBMC (deleting user data also) which didn't make any difference.

Pastebin of debug log when trying to playback files: http://pastebin.com/S4aeFDzY

HTPC specs:
E350 APU
GT 520 video card 285.76
4GB Ram
XBMC 11 w/Aeon MQ 2

Host specs:
i7 3770k
GTX 570 SLI 301.42
8gb ram

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

First off, it looks as if your skin has issues. You may want to switch to a truly Eden version of the skin. Maybe that one is supposed to be, but the warning and errors in the log say otherwise.

Are you using an old library from before the re-install? If so the sources need to have the EXACT same path as they did previously. Drive letters and folder need to be the same.

Thanks for the reply.

All the paths have been redone as i have deleted the whole library and re-added it multiple times. So the paths don't seem to be the issue. It can see the files in explorer and in xbmc but it just can't play them. Though i just checked, i cant even play them with VLC over the network either.. so I'm thinking there's a network problem? As i can see them, open them but nothing actually plays.

Will update the skin too but it was doing this on the default skin also so i don't think that's a part of the issue.

Skin is not the playback issue, I just noticed the errors when viewing the log. The log shows you playing from parh Z:. I assume that is a mapped network drive. Have you tried adding the paths as SMB paths, such as smb:\\tower\movies.

I originally had it as smb:\\tower\movies etc but it didn't work so tried the whole network drive but sadly that didnt work either. So something with the sharing has gone wrong maybe? I've un-shared/re-shared them over and over but it didn't seem to make any difference. Just weird that the HTPC can see the files in explorer and in XMBC but can't play them. I'm personally leaning towards something with my sharing due to only thing that has changed since it was working was the host computer.

I second your opinion. Wonder what it could be. Are you using simple sharing or setting them manually? I've always had better luck not using Windows sharing wizard crap. Also sometimes it is a good idea to shutdown everything including the router and client PCs and give them all a fresh reboot. I had an issue recently where I could not connect to only one of my PCs. Turned out the Client for Microsoft service had gone missing from my NIC. Once I re-added that, all was well.

I haved tried the same after a reinstall, I did manage it out, by adding the server though networkplaces with smb. Since then it all work as a charme with no problems. But, when I go though smb I can't play anything.

Ok, so i have installed xbmc on my mothers computer just to see if the network is the problem or not... seems it isnt the issue as it plays perfectly fine on her computer. i have a insert of the xbmc log from hers and 1 from mine when i try to play a file.

Seems the codecs on the htpc are all off or something? Or the demuxer?

All the codecs are built into XBMC. Can you access and play the files outside of XBMC? Try playing them with MPCHC using the same path.
