Seems like a like a silly question but... is there a way to control volume of XBMC on the ipad without the physical buttons? I tried playing with the Audio Settings - Volume did nothing, and Amplification worked but of course is not what I want.

I believe it is planned for Frodo to have OSD volume controls. It should still be possible to double tap the home button and then swipe left-to-right to bring up volume controls on an iPad.

In the touched skin you can control volume in the screen overlay afair. And for sure the volume in AudioSettings will work - i tried this a tons of times.
What version of XBMC are you running at? If its eden - then yes - there is no volume control. But in pre-frodo its already in.
