At least since Eden and still active in latest nightly there are some bugs regarding rendering of subtitles in .ass format. If a subtitle line is currently displayed alongside other subs, when those subs disappear they drag along the first one also disappearing until another subtitle is shown.
Here's an example:

Save as .ass and play it alongside any video file. The first subtitle should be displayed for 10 seconds (0-10), but when the four "TEXT" lines between 2-3 seconds disappear they drag along that first line, disappearing without reason. When the next subtitle is displayed (5-6 sec) it appears and vanishes again. MPC-HC or VLC work as intended. This is clearly visible when a dialog line is rendered among multiple sign subtitles, usually in anime fansubs. The sample is edited from an mkv embedded .ass file, so it's not designed to fail.
There's also a bug in some missing precision when rendering, but less annoying. Looks like most subtitles disappear 1 or 2 frames too early. For example, when covering signs the subtitles are usually rendered correctly but disappear too soon, catching a glimpse of the underlying sign. In MPC-HC they're perfectly timed.
