HELP - XMAS Gifts - Cheap PreBuilt XBMC Machine
#1
I am looking to give XBMC setups for christmas.

The users will will be using it with an external USB full of HD movies and also use Navi-X for streaming content.

I am looking to spend about $200 per machine... I don't need an OS pre-installed. I would like to run a Windows OS so the users can use there Netflix accounts but I am OK with using some form of Linux if it will make the machine run better.

Thanks in advance

The best I can recommend is to look into the Acer Revo RL70-UR10P. Yes,..they are more expensive than you're looking for,..but these babies run XBMC like a charm. They also come pre-installed with operating systems and some other extras.

Can't believe there is nothing close to this price that will work.....

there are options - just not as polished - you can get a cheapo android stick for $50 just be advised you will have to spend more time tinkering to get things to work. Considering you are looking to buy multiple you will also have to manage multiple you may want to invest the extra money into getting something that "just works"

Well windows means x86 which is a full PC. Yes you're looking for a tiny system that doesn't have much power but it still needs to be a PC. For $200 you can't get all the hardware required. For example a Foxconn E450 based PC is $185 on sale with no hard drive or RAM.

Also if you're looking to do Netflix HD then you need a decent processor as well. Linux is a problem because it runs on Silverlight, which is windows only, unless I'm not up-to-date with that.

Here's a comparable Intel Atom based system as well.

OK. What if I just want to be able to use XBMC and Linux? Forget about Windows and NetFlix

In theory, this should work.

Is there any theory in which this wouldn't work?
Is this better?

Yes. I have no problem adding parts and the OS if needed.

I think he intends to use it to install the USB stick containing the OS internally. Not sure I'd do so unless you think there is some risk of the user inadvertently removing or damaging it.

You didn't mention the device being tiny as a requirement... how small does the device need to be? Is built-in WiFi a requirement?

If it doesn't need to be tiny and you're ok with Wired Ethernet or USB WiFi, the below build would be quite similar to the previous recommendation and cost less. It is indeed larger than the Mini-ITX but is still a package that fits nicely alongside other CE equipment (DVD players, cable boxes, AVRs, etc). It can also facilitate an optical drive (allowing the user to eliminate a standalone DVD or BD player if necessary). Don't forget that you'll need a remote or at least an IR receiver if they

$160 + SH, including a remote/receiver. Could easily run Windows with an HDD instead of the USB.

You probably won't have much luck with Netflix HD... but hardware decoded video of most any other format should be unproblematic. Maybe along with the machine you give them a nudge towards Amazon Prime for video instead of Netflix... flash/h.264 and an XBMC add-on that's OS agnostic!
