Newegg has that for $290 with 2Gb RAM + 250Gb HDD

I don't like fully pre-built ones though because RAM is so cheap going to 4Gb is nothing and a small SSD (you don't need large capacity) is same or cheaper than a 2.5" HDD and much faster.

In theory, this should work.

Why do you have this on there? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6812200294 $5.16

Just to install it inside the case -- probably a good idea for a gift to keep someone from going "hey, what's this?" and removing it.

I never even thought of doing that. I'll be doing that for the in-laws from now on.

That will work, though I personally like using CF cards as my hard drive. But a usb drive should work too.

I got a few of those tiny 16GB USB sticks in a Black Friday deal (I think they were $6.99/ea) so they make for cheap storage. That one you see there is attached to a Celeron 847 (Intel 2000 HD graphics) motherboard running OpenELEC. With the USB cable that's $12 for 16GB storage. That makes me Smile.

BTW, take on of those cables and a USB-to-SATA adapter and you've got the making of an internal USB drive -- perfect for backup but no need for a external enclosure. I have one in my WHS for backup of the WHS itself.
