Games play, as I can hear the audio in the background, but despite launching with the --fullscreen option, a view of the XBMC menu stays in the foreground. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Try running with a script like here, this is what I do and it works fine:

That script won't work, as I don't run a DE, I don't think there are virtual desktops in bare X.

Not worth bumping. This mysteriously fixed itself. Could have been with software updates..
