when xbmcbuntu restarts X (including reboot) it starts the session it was last in - so if you are in the xbmcbuntu session (ie desktop) it will boot back to that.
Solution: log out of xbmcbuntu, log in to xbmc session - xbmc should start. When you reboot it should do so again.
